۱Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion strategy: a solution to reduce fuel consumption and emission levels

Premixed Compression Ignition (PCI) combustion strategies are promising methods to achieve low engineout NOx and soot emissions and high‐efficiency. However, PCI strategies have failed to see widespreadimplementation due to difficulties controlling the heat release rate and lack of an adequate combustion phasingcontrol mechanism. In this research, a dual‐fuel reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) concept isinvestigated numerically to address advantages of this strategy. In the RCCI strategy two fuels with differentauto‐ignition characteristics are blended inside the combustion chamber. Combustion phasing is controlledby the relative ratios of these two fuels and the combustion duration is controlled by spatial stratificationbetween them. A CFD modeling is used to propose the RCCI strategy to evaluate the ability of this approach inreducing the emissions level and increasing the engine efficiency. A KIVA‐CHEMKIN code is developed to predictthe combustion characteristics of a dual‐fuel RCCI engine.<\div>
