Software–Defined Networking (SDN) has drawn increasing attention from both industry and academia, owing to its premise to simplify the management and control over large networks. The Software–Defined Network approach decouples control and forwarding planes. Disconnection between the control and forwarding planes may lead to severe packet loss and performance degradation. Controller placement has great influence on performance and latency in software defined networks. Controller placement is known as NP–hard problem and most of greedy and heuristic based algorithms have been failed to satisfy goals. In this paper, we proposed a novel genetic based controller placement in SDNs, so as to minimize the latency of control networks. Genetic algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm which has been widely studied in optimization problems. We implemented our novel controller placement algorithm in Mininet. We compared our proposed algorithm with random controller placement. Experimental results proved that genetic based controller placement algorithm not only decreases complexity of network, it also has less latency and better performance.<\div>
