Computing of critical depth in open channels is essential not only for determining the condition of a flow but also for hydraulic analysis and design of open channels. In this paper, based on an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm, an alternative method for calculation of critical depth in circular and parabolic cross section channel is presented. The governing equations are transferred to an objective function that is minimized using the ACO method in order to calculate critical depth. The proposed method has high accuracy compared with the existing solutions. The concepts presented in this research can be generalized for solving other hydraulic engineering problems<\div>
