۱Antifungal Activity of Five Plant Essential Oils Against Soil–borne Plant Pathogenic Fungi

Since the middle ages, essential oils have been widely used for fungicidal, bactericidal, virucidal, anti–parasitical, insecticidal, medicinal and cosmetic applications, especially nowadays in pharmaceutical, sanitary, cosmetic, agriculture and food industries. This study was undertaken to explore the effect of essential oils from Satureja hortensis, Origanum vulgar, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Allium hirtifolium and Anethum gravcolens against two well–known plant pathogenic fungi, Fusarium moniliforme and F. graminearum. In addition some observations were made using microscopic scanning (MS) to detect possible alterations on the hyphal growth. The data of mycelium growth recorded at 5 days after inoculation at 27±1°C show that Satureja hortensis essential oil perfectly inhibited growth of both fungi tested at concentration 100ppm in PDA medium. Origanum vulgar, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Allium hirtifolium oils were effective at concentration 800ppm and Anethum gravcolens oils had no effect. MS observations revealed alterations in the growth pattern of hyphae when the essential oil of Satureja hortensis was present. These results indicate that essential oil of S. hortensis could be used for management of these pathogens as a potential source of sustainable eco–friendly botanical fungicides.<\div>

۲Effects of Satureja hortensis essential oil on the growth and pathogenicity mechanisms of Rhizoctonia solani

Essential oils are complex volatile compounds, naturally synthesized by various parts of the plant during the secondary metabolism of plants. In nature, essential oils play an important role in the protection of the plants as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, insecticides and also against herbivores by reducing their appetite for such plants. Recently the essential oils as a new method to control plant disease. In this study the effect of essential oil of Satureja hortensis was prepared by using a Clevenger apparatus and its antifungal effect on Rhizoctonia solani was investigated based on mixing essential oil with medium with three replicates. Evaluation of antifungal activity of essential oil was tested at different concentrations (i.e. 0–600ppm). No growth at concentration more than 600ppm. In section survey of enzyme activity, the essential oil reduces cellulose activity but over time, the effect of essential oil decreased. Results of this practice show that compounds of essential oil reduce fungal growth and enzyme activity. Considering that the production of cellulose enzyme is one of the most important mechanisms influencing penetration to the host, thus reducing the amount of secreted enzymes by essential oil effect on pathogenic mechanisms and cellulose gene expression. Thus, these results show that essential oils could be used as better supplements or alternatives against the pathogenic microorganisms.<\div>
