۱Full scale performance of compost`s leachate treatment by biological anaerobic filters

A very wide range of treatment processes have been applied to leachate treatment with varying success. The aim of this research was to examine the performance of two anaerobic biological filters in a new full scale leachate treatment plant in Rasht composting facility, north of Iran. The studied plant was operated during nearly 12 month and treats up to 50 m3\d of fresh compost leachate. The average COD and BOD5 of raw leachate was measured to be 81000 and 39000 mg\l respectively. 30% of effective volume of each reactor was filled with the clay blocks with specific area of 87 m2\m3asthe fixed bed. The sequencing of reactors was down flow and up flow respectively. Removal of COD was in average 85% and of BOD5approx. 89% indicating good degradation of biodegradable organic matter. The maximum COD removal efficiency of 91% was achieved with 4.5 kgCOD\m3.d of organic loading rate and 7500 mg\.l of VSS. There was no significant difference in COD removal efficiency when the reactors were operated with organic load between 2 and 5 kg COD\m3.d.Increasing of volumetric organic loading rate above 6 kg COD\m3.d caused considerable reduction of COD removal efficiency. COD removal efficiency reached to less than 70% when organic load rising to 10.8 kg COD\m3.d. Nevertheless, biological filter proved to be a feasible technique for the treatment of the composting leachate under study, and it can be considered as a suitable treatment for this type of wastewaters.<\div>

۲Antimicrobial activity of imidazolium based ionic liquids

Searching for newly antimicrobial agents is of prominent importance. Today, it has been demonstrated that many ionic liquids (ILs) have a certain degree of antibacterial activity. However information on the antimicrobial activity of ILs is very scarce. This paper reports and compares antibacterial activity of methylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) including [BMIM][NO3], [OMIM][NO3], [BMIM][SCN] and [OMIM][SCN] against a wide range of pathogenic and semi–pathogenic, Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. These include P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli, B. cereus, B. subtilis, S. typhimurium, and K. pneumonia. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using conventional assays i.e. agar disk diffusion assay, agarwell diffusion assay as well as determining Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The results of the study demonstrated that all ILs have antimicrobial activity against mentioned pathogens, however in different degrees. In comparison, the ILs with longer alkyl chain length (octyl) showed very strong antimicrobial activity compared to ILs with butyl chain<\div>

۳EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AND THERMODYNAMIC MODELLING OF CARBON DIOXIDE SOLUBILITY IN [BMIM][BF4] IONIC LIQUID

New experimental results have been presented for the total pressure above liquid mixtures of carbon dioxide and the ionic liquid. The series of experiments were performed at different temperature and liquid phase composition using a very precise high–pressure stirred reactor system based on the pressure drop method. A temperature range from (298.15 to 333.15) K was investigated where the maximum pressure reached approximately 4 MPa. The experimental results indicated the solubility of carbon dioxide increased by increasing pressure and decreased by increasing temperature. The (extended) Henry’s law has been successfully applied to correlate the solubility pressures.<\div>

۴ADSORPTION OF GLYCOLIPID TO THE SURFACE USING PLASMA TECHNOLOGY; ANTIMICROBIAL EVALUATION

Pseudomonas aeruginosa MA01 isolated from spoiled apple in our previous work and identified as glycolipid producer. This glycolipid proved to have great antimicrobial activity. In the present paper, we tried to examine the possibility of glycolipid adsorption on the polypropylene surface, a very applicable polymer in food and pharmaceutical industries, to evaluate antimicrobial properties of surface. For this purpose, the polymeric film was treated using low pressure cold plasma of air gas. Different plasma exposure times of 1, 4, 8 and 12 min were investigated to evaluate surfacecharacteristics. After activating the surface by plasma, the glycolipid was adsorbed on the surface andthe effect of plasma exposure time was studied. AFM analyses was used to see the changes on thepolymeric surface. Contact angle measurements was done in order to evaluate the hydrophobicity of thesurface. The results of the study showed that the produced glycolipid with regards to the plasma operating condition can be successfully attached to the PP surface, however depending on the plasma operating conditions. Antibacterial performance was investigated against B. Subtilis and B. cereus with agar disk diffusion assay. The results of the study showed significant antibacterial activity of polypropylene film with a plasma exposure time of 8 min.<\div>

۵AQUEOUS TWO–PHASE SYSTEMS OF IONIC LIQUID 1–HEXYL 3–METHYLIMIDAZOLIUM NITRATE AND SODIUM CARBONATE AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES: EXPERIMENTAL AND CORRELATION

Ionic liquid–based aqueous two phase system offer an attractive alternative to volatile organic solvents in liquid–liquid extraction. In this work, the binodal curves of aqueous 1–hexyl 3–methylimidazolium nitrate ([Hmim][NO3]) + sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) system have been determined at 288.15, 298.15 and 308.15 K. The Merchuk and two empirical equations were used to correlate the experimental binodal data. These models agreed well with the experimental binodal data. The effects of temperature on the binodal curves were studied, and the two–phase area was found to expand with decrease in temperature.<\div>
