۱Kinetics of styrene biodegradation by an industrial activated sludge

The kinetics of the aerobic biodegradation of styrene using an activated sludge obtained from the wastewater treatment plant of a Petrochemical complex in Iran was evaluated. For this purpose synthetic wastewater samples containing styrene in the concentration range 0–123 mg\l were prepared and biodegradation assays were carried out in serum bottles using shake flask cultivation. The styrene concentration in the liquid phase was monitored via determination of styrene concentration in the gas phase of the serum bottles using headspace method. The dependence of specific degradation rate (SDR) on styrene was determined. It was found that Haldane equation adequately predicted the biodegradation of styrene.<\div>

۲Influence of transient loading on the removal of high concentrations of VOCs in a biological air filter

In this research, the elimination of high concentrations of toluene and hexane from waste air was studied in a biofilter under transient condition. The system was operated 10 h a day on the air residence times 0.9, 1.5 and 3 min and 2–3.8 gm–3 of pollutant concentration. Regarding the harsh biological condition of biofilter media such as high pollutant concentration and daily intermittent aeration, reaching the steady–state situation and removal efficiency of 90% took about 44 days. The elimination capacity of higher than 62 gm–3h–1 was observed in the entire of the experiment. Results showed that the performance of the system improved gradually after the daily starting the aeration and the times elapsed to achieve the maximum removal efficiency were 2.5 and 1 h for toluene and hexane, respectively.<\div>

۳Spectral shifting of UV–A wavelengths for enhancing microalgae growth rate

This study investigates the modification of UV–A radiation for enhancing the growth rate of chlorella sp. in a simulated photobioreactor made of UV–stabilized polycarbonateplates. Uvitex OB was dissolved in a PMMA–based resin and the mixture was applied as a coating to shift the UV –A radiation to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Thefeasibility of applying the Uvitex OB in a PMMA–based resin, which was used as fluorescent layer to shift UV–A to PAR range, was explored. For this purpose, a variety ofconcentrations of Uvitex OB in resin were prepared and coated on polycarbonate (PC)sheets, which were placed between the radiation source and the culture flask. Compared to the uncoated PC sheet, the PC panels coated with the wavelength shifter layer causedan approximately 1.7–fold increase in final optical density of culture media during the same culture period<\div>
