This paper proposes an improved structure of afive–level grid–connected inverter which uses lower number ofswitches compared to the similar topologies. FFT analysis of theoutput voltage also illustrates the improvement of the totalharmonic distortion (THD). The multilevel inverter reliability isone of the key parameters in the renewable energy systems. Asso, it is investigated based on IEC–TR–62380, since IEC–TR–6280covers all of the multilevel inverters components such asresistances; capacitors; and especially MOSFETs as well asIGBTs. This standard also considers the package typeeffectiveness and the system performance. As a result, thereliability evaluation based on IEC–TR–62380 become moreaccurate than the other standards, in the proposed converter.Also, the reliability evaluation results illustrate more reliability inthe proposed five–level inverter compared to other structures.Simulation results carried out by Matlab verifies theperformance of the proposed five–level inverter.<\div>
