The contamination of Nigeria rural environment most especially soil and water from natural sources and other anthropogenic sources such as agriculture has a lot of health concerns. Sustainable raw materials derived from agricultural waste can be used to remediate contaminated water and soil or reduce the amount of contaminants in water before being discharged into the environment. In this paper, the causes and effects of rural contaminants in rural Nigeria were highlighted. Some sustainable materials that are useful for abating the contaminations were also highlighted. Activated carbon from rice husk, bagasse andplants straws were identified to be useful raw materials for such application. Chitosan derived from chitin that is available in crustaceans, fungi, insect and mushrooms was also identified as useful in removal of these contaminants.
