Abstract The bio–hydrogen and bio–methane productions from paper mill effluent (PME) were done via dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion, respectively. The experiments were performed using Heat–shock pre–treated anaerobic sludge under mesophilic conditions. The impact of substrate concentration (5, 10 and 15 g–COD\L) and the initial pH of the system (5 and 7) on the efficiency of dark hydrogen fermentation from PME were investigated, and the optimum hydrogen yield of 55.4 mL\g–COD was obtained at substrate concentration and pH of 5 and 5, respectively. After the definition of the optimum substrate concentration and initial pH, three substrate hydrolysis including acidic, acidic–thermal and alkaline hydrolysis were done which the alkaline hydrolysis led to the maximum hydrogen yield of 62.2 mL\g–COD. Moreover, the highest methane yield of 569 mL\g–COD was obtained at substrate concentration and pH of 5 and 7, respectively.<\div>
