۱Influence of alcohol addition on gas hold–up, liquid circulation velocity and mass transfer coefficient in a Packed Bed Split– Cylinder airlift bioreactor

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of different alcohols on the hydrodynamics and oxygen mass transfer characteristics in a split–cylinder airlift reactor, both with and without packing. The hydrodynamic parameters and mass transfer coefficient in 1% (v\v) aqueous solutions of four aliphatic alcohols (CnH2n+1OH, n = 1–4) were examined. The experimental results showed that the addition of alcohols increase gas hold–up and volumetric gas–liquid mass transfercoefficient which is due to smaller bubble diameter, but lead to a significant decrease of liquid circulation velocity relative to the values determined for tap water system. This behavior is enhanced by alcohols with long carbon chain lengths, which has been explained on the basis ofsurface tension effects. Small amount of ceramic Pall Ring packing with78% porosity has been inserted in the riser section of airlift bioreactor .The packing installation increases the overall gas– liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient, gas hold–up and decreases bubble size and liquid circulation velocity<\div>

۲CFD simulation of hydrodynamics in a split–cylindrical airlift reactor containing surfactant solution

The CFD simulation of the hydrodynamics in bubbly flow in a split–cylindrical airlift reactor with surfactant solutions is performed. Four types of liquid, i.e., water and three various types of surfactants (containing Tween80, Triton X–405 and SDS) with concentration of 5 ppm were used in the experiments. The aim of this study is to show the ability of CFD to properly simulate hydrodynamic parameters in such bubbly flow. The experimental and CFD results showed that surfactants existence strongly increases gas hold–up although it decreased the liquid circulation velocity. Also, a simple empirical correlation based on dimensionless groups was developed to predict the gas hold–up in airlift reactor with surfactant solutions. The simulation results showed a good agreement with experimental data.<\div>

This article focuses on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of mass transfer in two–phase bubbly flow in a split–cylindrical airlift reactor with surfactant solutions. Three various types of surfactants (containing Tween80, Triton X–405 and SDS) with concentration of 5 ppm were used in the experiments. Different models of volumetric mass transfer coefficient are compared with the experimental data. Also, a simple empirical correlation based on dimensionless groups was developed to predict the volumetric mass transfer coefficients in airlift reactors containing surfactant solutions.<\div>
