۱Removal of Carbamazepine from Aqueous Solutions by Sulfate Radical–Advanced Oxidation Process (SR–AOP)

n this study, degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) by sulfate radical–advanced oxidation process (SR–AOP) was investigated. Sulfate radicals (SRs) were generated by activation of oxidants such as peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5−) and persulfate (PS, S2O2−) through transition metal cations (Fe2+and Cu2+). Batch oxidation experiments for CBZ decomposition were conducted at ambient temperature for 4 hours with initial pH of 4. The results indicated that SRs generated from these oxidant\metal conjugations, especially PS\Fe2+and PMS\Fe2+, were found to be very effective for degradation of CBZ, while using the oxidants alone was not suitable for this aim. Effect of metal and oxidant dose, temperature, COD andchloride ions on the oxidation process was studied. Optimum molar ratio of oxidant:metal was 1:1and at CBZ:oxidant molar ratio of 1:20, the maximum degradation of CBZ was observed. Under the optimized conditions, PMS\Fe2+and PS\Fe2+combinations achieved 94% and 72% CBZ removal in 20 minutes, respectively<\div>
