The aim of this study which has been conducted in a monolingual and mono–cultural settingwith regard to Persian language is to shed light on how native speakers of Persian use thespeech act of refusal in shopping contexts where they decline to purchase a product thesalesperson attempts to sell. Data were obtained through a discourse completion test (DCT)from 30 female and 30 male participants which were randomly selected. The DCT includedeight hypothetical shopping situations. The collected data were analyzed based coding systemdeveloped by Beebe, Takahashi, and Uliss–Weltz (1990). Findings indicated that both malesand females utilize a variety of direct, indirect, and adjuncts to refusals where they areunwilling to purchase a product and the salesperson attempts to persuade them to.<\div>

۲Difficulties of Iranian EFL Students in Pronouncing Common Words in English and Persian

English and Persian languages belong to the Indo–European languages family. There are somecommon words between these two languages, although, the number of these words is very smallin comparison with languages such as French and German. Correct pronunciation of commonwords has always been a challenging area for EFL students. The aim of this study is to estimatethe difficulties of Iranian EFL learners in pronouncing common words between English andPersian. In order to achieve this purpose, 20 intermediate male students who study English atBatar Language Institute were chosen. The researchers prepared a 20–word list, containing 10English words in Persian and 10 Persian words in English, for the participants, and asked thempronounce the words, and recorded their voices for analyzing. The results of the study indicatedthat the participants had more difficulties in pronouncing the Persian words.<\div>

The present study was an attempt to consider the women and men written discourse in socialnetworks and on Facebook in particular, among Iranian to investigate the way that they use thelanguage to express themselves and the differences between their comments on the basis ofemotion and the length. Due to their special subjects two specific pages have been chosen tocollect the data. The findings showed the difference among different gender comments.According to the findings it was concluded that women are more emotional in commenting thanmen, but the number of men’s comments is more than women and also the length of theircomments is more than women.<\div>

۴How EFL Students Can Learn English through Phonetics Using a Communicative Method

The goal of this research was to study phonetic in learning English communicatively. In thisresearch we used two groups of participants, each of them consisted 20 intermediate malelanguage learners. In our controlled group CLT was used in the way language learners weresitting round and had free discussions. In our experiment group we used CLT and phonetic wastaught along with using Viber application in order to expose students more with English andphonetics. Learners had 1 month of treatment in the experiment group and in order to find outabout the result and also learners improvement, pretest and posttest were given. The data whichhad been gathered by pretest and posttest was evaluated through SPSS.<\div>

۵Speech Act Disagreement among Young Men in Iran

Speech act of disagreement is one of the least attended among all the other types ofspeech act. The present study seeks to find out the ways in which this inherentlythreatening act is expressed by young male Persian speakers. To gather the neededdata one hundred participants randomly selected from among a population of BA andMA students of Isfahan and Najafabad universities were asked to complete adiscourse completion test (DCT) designed by the researchers. The respondents wereto read six natural situations, and react to them via making disagreements. As themajor focus of the study was the role that gender and power play in the application ofpoliteness strategies, the participants were expected to disagree with two higher powerinterlocutors (one male and one female), two peers (one male and one female) andtwo addressees with lower power status (one male and one female). In order toanalyze the units of disagreement, Muntigl and Turnbull’s taxonomy (1995) wasemployed. Students’ responses were further compared with Brown and Levinson’spoliteness strategies. The results revealed that respondents use confrontationalstrategies more frequently whenever expressing their oppositions to a person with thesame sex which could be explained with regards to the effect of social solidaritywhich can potentially over rule the effect of power and gender differences.<\div>

۶The effect of Mobile Assisted Language Learning on Pragmatic Competence of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners

This study aimed to find whether there is any significant difference between those who learnpragmatic competence through Viber online group and those without online group and justthrough class drills and activities. To do so, 50 EFL learners have been chosen after they hadgiven OPT for homogenizing and they were divided into two groups, one experimental group toreceive the treatment and one without treatment as control group. The final result taken from datagathered by the performance of two groups. After analyzing the collected data, findings havebeen shown that the experimental group outperformed the control group, so it can be concludedthat the Viber online group has a significant effect on pragmatic competence of EFL learners.<\div>
